Full Description
This unit describes the second and third layers of the OSI reference model, the Data Link layer and the Physical Layer. It describes functions include physical addressing, network topology, error notification, sequencing frames, and flow control for the Data Link Layer and identifies the organizations that define the communication and networking standards for the Physical Layer. Described also are the different coding types used in a LAN and the coding type used in Ethernet. The unit also describes the different types of media used for communication in LANs and WANs, the different topologies used in a LAN, as well as the different LAN technologies and their functions, LAN technologies that are discussed are: Ethernet and IEEE 802.3, Token Ring and IEEE802.5, and FDDI. CSMA/CD is also explained. Fast Ethernet options, such as 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-FX, and Gigabit Ethernet and half duplex and full duplex operations, are also discussed in the unit along with the topologies in which computers can be connected in a WAN are different agencies that define and manage the WAN and Physical Layer standards, and the different WAN protocols in the Data Link layer.


Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course level students should be able to describe the second and third layers of the OSI reference model. They should also know and understand protocols, functions, addressing network topologies. Student should also be able to identify the organizations that define communication and networking standards, define and manage WAN standards and protocols in the Physical Layer.


Assessment:
Students are presented with pre-course test to determine their knowledge before taking the course. During the course students will be presented with a series of quizzes to determine gained knowledge and retention of each section. At the end of the course students will be given a post course test to measure their overall understanding of the subject and retention of knowledge. By comparing their pre and post course test scores, students will be able to measure their knowledge gain.
