Course Description

Intro to K-12 Online Teaching is designed to give you an understanding of developing and teaching an online course. It is a basic level course and will prepare you to begin to develop an online course or course supplement. This course has been approved for one SB-CEU upon completion with a 70 percent or better passing score. It is also a prerequisite to the Intensive Course Development class.

This course will:

  • Provide background and path for learning to teach online.
  • Give you the same type of experience your students will have.
  • Show you the importance of engaging students in interactive experiences.
  • Help you decide the degree to which you want to integrate education technology into your teaching.

Outcome

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the pedagogical concepts, trends and mechanics of online teaching and learning. 
  • Recognize the types of learning tools and resources available online.
  • Assess your own abilities and interest in teaching online and using technology.
  • Apply the principles learned in this course to begin creating your own course, if you so choose.

Assessment

This course has been approved for one State of Michigan SB-CEU upon completion with a 70 percent or better passing score. It is also a prerequisite to the Intensive Course Development class.


Outline
  1. Lesson 1 - Introduction to Teaching Online-- In this lesson, the history and development of online teaching and learning is discussed along with a number of forms of online instruction. Also covered are good elements of instructional design and workload estimation as they apply to K-12.

  2. Lesson 2 - Differences and Similarities-- In this lesson, the differences in online versus face-to-face is detailed along with guidelines for developing and conducting online courses. Course organization and navigation are discussed along with examples that help K-12 teachers get the most out of their experience.

  3. Lesson 3 - Finding and Using Online Resources-- This lesson covers online research. Resources for online research are detailed along with links to online libraries and databases that may be helpful in creating an online course. Pertinent resources for the K-12 environment are included.

  4. Lesson 4 - Course Management Software--Course management systems and less formal methods used to develop online courses such as Web sites, links and assessment software are discussed.

  5. Lesson 5 - Communication Tools-- Tips to communicate effectively in an online course are covered in this lesson including e-mail and synchronous and asynchronous discussion boards. References for online quizzes and assessment tools created for K-12 are included.

  6. Lesson 6 - Assignments-- This lesson discusses non-Web-based and Web-based online assignments online assignments. The information provided will help you and your students find, evaluate and cite information found online.

  7. Lesson 7 - Assessments-- Learn to conduct effective assessments. Test item categories are detailed and information on improving test questions for online assessment and some of the benefits and drawbacks found in online assessments are discussed.
