Course Description
The Certified Production Technician (CPT) certification from MSSC is designed to assess and certify the skills of front-line manufacturing production workers.

Qualified entry-level workers and first level supervisors are in high demand in the manufacturing industry and the CPT certification qualifies candidates young and old to take more senior positions, earn higher salaries and relieve the vast shortage of eligible labor in the field.

CPT Certification Prep program, is a combination of 16 tech training courses in manufacturing, industrial processes, industrial maintenance and industry skills that prepare candidates with a comprehensive level of knowledge for manufacturing jobs, and cover the entire set of skills required to take the CPT certification from MSSC. In addition the program offers access to a live Practice Test to enable candidates to evaluate their level before taking the actual exam through MSSC.

About MSSC

The Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) is an industry-led, training, assessment and certification system focused on the core skills and knowledge needed by the nation’s front-line production and material handling workers. Based on industry-defined and federally endorsed standards, MSSC offers entry-level and incumbent workers the opportunity to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills needed in the technology-intensive jobs of the 21st century

About CPT

The Certified Production Technician test is an industry accepted certification that tests students on four key areas relevant to advanced jobs in manufacturing and production:
•Safety
•Quality Practices & Measurement
•Manufacturing Processes & Production
•Maintenance Awareness

The CPT exam is delivered by MSSC online and is not included in this course of study; this is an exam prep course. Candidates must pass all four sections. MSSC offers assessments at various Authorized Assessment Centers throughout the country. To find a center near you, see this map: http://msscusa.org/locations.

Please note: Course of study may be completed earlier than indicated and students retain access for one year from the date of enrollment.

Outline
CPT Prep Curriculum

A series of 16 self-paced courses designed to lead students systematically through the skills required for 21st century production jobs. Educators can track, grade and support multiple students, in multiple classes and at different skill levels to achieve the end goal of certification. Each course is approximately 15 hours of content.

Mathematics for Technicians I is designed to equip technicians with the math skills they are likely to need on a daily basis. Topics covered include arithmetic and algebra, types of numbers (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), percentages, ratios and proportions, systems of measurement, geometry, and trigonometry. (Prerequisite courseware)

Mechanical Fasteners may be taught as a virtual module, delivered entirely online with interactive activities, or as a blended module with both virtual and hardware-based activities. Through twelve activities, students identify and work with the many types of fasteners used in engineering and industrial environments. For blended lab applications, a separate hardware package is available with all the tools covered in the activities.

Hand Tools play a key role in the everyday tasks of technicians. Hand Tools features skills-based curriculum delivered through seventeen activities in which students learn all aspects of using hand tools. Hand Tools may be taught as a virtual module, delivered entirely online with interactive activities, or as a blended module with both virtual and hardware-based activities. A hardware package is available with all the tools covered.

Power Tools play a key role in the everyday tasks of technicians. Power Tools delivers twelve skills-based activities, in which students learn all aspects of using power tools. Power Tools may be taught as a virtual module, delivered entirely online with interactive activities, or as a blended module with both virtual and hardware-based activities. A separate hardware package is available with all the tools covered in the activities.

Safety Fundamentals is one of the most important aspects of an industrial training program. This dedicated safety module explores all aspects of manufacturing and workplace safety with the objective of educating students about safety norms, procedures and laws. Students will have a high level of regard for safety practices after completing this course.

Lockout/Tagout procedures are critical in creating a safe work environment. Lockout Tagout delivers skills-based curriculum through virtual and hands-on activities. Students learn all aspects of lockout/tagout procedures in industrial environments. Through interactive activities, students learn about lockout devices, conducting energy control analysis, performing lockout/tagout and more.

Industry and Career Skills is a module that aims to prepare high school and college students with the skills required to apply for, and succeed in their first job. The module covers job application topics such as setting career goals, résumé preparation and interview skills. It provides training on basic employment skills such as time management, teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, and more.

Math for Technicians II applies advanced mathematics concepts to everyday tasks. Through interactive activities students learn about drive ratios, Ohm’s Law, mechanical principles, and how these concepts apply in the engineering and industrial environments.

Blueprint Reading delivers skills-based curriculum through virtual activities. Students learn all aspects of reading and interpreting blueprints in engineering and industrial environments, including views, tolerances, cutting planes, thread dimensions, and welding symbols

Mechanical Measurement and Quality Control enables students to gain a solid foundation of knowledge and skill in performing measurements and calculations. Students use precision measurement tools, such as steel rule, tape measure, protractor, micrometer, height gauge, various calipers and dial indicators. Students gain proficiency in reading mechanical drawings, in selecting the proper tools for inspecting parts and in preparing quality control/inspection reports.

Fundamentals of Pneumatics introduces the principles of pneumatics and pneumatically controlled systems commonly used in automated manufacturing environments. Pneumatic simulation software allows you to create, modify, operate and observe simulated industrial grade pneumatic and electro-pneumatic devices and circuits. Students will connect different components, change physical parameters and observe system responses. The module emphasizes basic skills in operating simulation software and industrial components.

Lubrication for Technicians conveys skills-based curriculum through virtual and hands-on activities. Students learn about lubrication equipment, application methods lubrication schedules, special purpose greases, synthetic lubricants, packing bearings and more.

Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing introduces the student to the manufacturing industry and its associated career paths. Students learn about careers offered in manufacturing and about how to prepare for and then pursue those careers. Students learn how manufacturing companies operate. A number of common manufacturing technologies are described. The use of computers and automation in manufacturing is explored. Students work on hands-on projects designed to provide insight into the world of manufacturing.

Lean Manufacturing explores the principles and techniques involved in lean manufacturing including minimizing waste in production, improving work flow in industrial processes.

Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) exposes students to automation and industrial applications by combining CNC technology with robotics and materials handling. Students develop and edit programs, record precise robotic positions, accurately mill parts, and synchronize mill and robot operation. Students gain “virtual hands-on” experience in CNC and robot programming, especially in I/O commands. Students design solutions for industrial FMS applications with emphasis on real industrial concerns, such as optimization and accurate machine tending.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is a module which fully replicates industrial CIM using the OpenCIM Software. The activities include parts and production flow, storage setup, production planning, machine definition, defining product parts and processes, timing and optimization and integrated production. MSSC Prep Exam (4 Exams focused on Safety, Quality, Manufacturing and Maintenance) – 90 minutes each

While candidates can study the materials and take the exam independently, MSSC reports that students enrolled in CPT training programs have a higher success rate. CPT Prep develops students learning skills, familiarizes students with the environment they will work in and enhances their thought process to the level of a supervisor.

The CPT prep courseware includes 16 modules of training that cover all of the concepts in the CPT certification test, and includes even more comprehensive coverage of the required topics.
